Amy Spiteri

KSA MA film making

Amy Spiteri is a Maltese documentary filmmaker who is interested in films that challenge stigma, inequality and oppression. Amy’s background is in Social Work and through the years she has worked with people from different backgrounds and who have experienced various difficulties including disability, abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, persecution and mental health.

Amy’s interest in film making started from her childhood as her father used to enjoy capturing family memories on his video camera. Amy started making her own films when she was 17 years old, initially as a hobby with her friends. In 2010, she was chosen as a participant for East4South, a project organised by Deutsche Welle, through which she not only had the wonderful opportunity of receiving training but also to work with African and European journalists whilst filming in Nigeria. Following this experience Amy decided to further her studies in filmmaking.

Amy moved to London in 2012, where she completed an MA in Filmmaking at Kingston University. Since her graduation, she has completed two short documentaries. ‘Meet Alice’ was her first documentary which was completed as part of ‘Inna Vision School’ with the aim of portraying films to challenge mental health stigma. This film was nominated for ‘Mind Media Awards’ in 2014. The second documentary, ‘Homelessness’, portrays the stories of 3 people who have experienced homelessness and their journey of recovery from it.

For the past 9 years since her graduation, Amy has been working as a Social Worker in London with people who are experiencing complex mental health difficulties. She is currently working on her first feature length documentary about her mother who passed away from cancer in August 2022 when Amy was 11 weeks pregnant.
